John Ward "JB" Brown

August 20, 1943 — October 16, 2025

Odem

John Ward “JB” Brown, 82, of Odem, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on October 16, 2025. Born on August 20, 1943, in Corpus Christi, Texas, John lived a life marked by strength, service, and unwavering dedication to his family, faith, and community.

A proud graduate of Roy Miller High School in the Class of 1960, John went on to enlist in the U.S. Air Force in 1961, and was stationed in Okinawa and later in Altus, Oklahoma. This era of his life laid the foundation to his training in heavy equipment and rigging. After his discharge from the USAF, he was hired by Berry Contracting and the rest is history.

John built a distinguished career as a Rigging Superintendent for Berry Contracting, CC Crane, and TNT Crane. Known for his exceptional skills and fearless approach to complex challenges, he was often called upon to move vessels over bridges that others deemed impossible. Local refineries and gas plants frequently requested John by name to oversee their most critical projects. His reputation for precision and reliability made him a respected figure throughout the industry.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was deeply devoted to his faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In retirement, he found great fulfillment in his ministry work—particularly at truck stops—where he connected with truckers through shared experiences. He also volunteered his rigging expertise to assist with expanding Kingdom Hall buildings alongside his longtime friend Charles Fritcher of Sinton, Texas. After Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of the region, John played a vital role in disaster relief efforts by locating and transporting mobile homes for fellow Witnesses affected by the storm. For many years, he also contributed to the hauling, setup, and teardown of equipment for local and district conventions.

John’s generosity extended far beyond his professional and religious commitments. He was known for helping anyone in need—whether through hands-on assistance or heartfelt encouragement. A man of action with a heart of gold, he was always ready to lend his time and talents where they were most needed.

At home, John found joy in simple pleasures. He loved working on old Ford tractors and spent countless hours feeding and watching birds and squirrels around his property—quiet moments that reflected his appreciation for nature and life’s small blessings.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Gloria Dell Brown; daughters, Rhonda (Kevin) Honeycutt and Cynthia (Sherman) Edgington; son, Jacob (Kimberly) Brown; granddaughter, Helen Edgington; nephew, Dean Brown; and cousin, Laura Greenwood. His memory is also cherished by many friends and colleagues who were touched by his kindness and strength.

John was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Brown, Sr. and Helen Porter; brother, George H. Brown; half-brother, Tony Seagle; sister, Jerry Edmonson; and cousin, Phillip Warner.

John’s legacy is one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering faith. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Donations in John’s memory may be made to JW.org. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
