Oscar Espinoza

Oscar Espinoza passed away on September 10, 2026, from complications related to a stroke he had previously suffered. He was 86 years old.

Born in Catarina, Texas, in 1940, Oscar was one of nine children and grew up surrounded by the values of family, perseverance, and community that would guide him throughout his life. He pursued his education at Eastern New Mexico University and later attended Texas Tech Law School.

Throughout his career, Oscar dedicated himself to education, public service, and advocacy. He worked as a history teacher in Eagle Pass, Texas, and later served in a variety of organizations focused on advancing opportunities for underserved communities, including farmworker and community development initiatives.

More important than any title or position, Oscar will be remembered as a loving father, a kind and deeply sensitive soul, and a man whose warmth drew people to him. He treasured time spent with family and friends, possessed a distinctive wry sense of humor, and delighted those around him with his gift for storytelling. His stories, whether humorous, thoughtful, or reflective, connected generations and will remain among his most enduring legacies.

Oscar is survived by his sister, Olga Young; his daughter, Eulalia Rowena East of San Antonio, Texas; his son, Joaquin Espinoza of Washington, DC; his granddaughters, Alma and Leonora; and his nephew, John Lee Conyers of Corpus Christi, Texas, whose care and support meant so much during Oscar's later years.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Oscar will be laid to rest alongside his parents, returning to the family cemetery that has long been a place of remembrance and connection.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
