Shirley Mae Cox

January 22, 1935 — November 3, 2025

Beeville

Shirley Mae Hutchins Cox, 90, born January 22, 1935, found eternal peace on November 3, 2025, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She, her daughter Deanna, and two granddaughters, Julie and Jamie Blackwell, shared her final days together.

She was born in Houston, Texas to the late Teresa McGrew Hutchins and Claude Hutchins. She graduated from high school in Beeville, Texas, where she was known for a highly competitive spirit, love and skill for basketball, voted "Most Athletic" and was chosen by her peers to represent them as the Duchess of Beeville.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Tracy Cox and the father of her children, Lloyd Charles Billings; her children Bill Billings and Diane Carol Billings; and her brothers, Gene Hutchins, Davis Hutchins, Doug Hutchins, and Jerry Don Hutchins.

She is survived by her sister, Kathy Lott (Oscar Rodriguez); her children, David Billings (Sharon) and Deanna Blackwell; her grandchildren, Julie Blackwell Edlin (Shawn), Jerry Blackwell III (Eva), and Jamie Blackwell (Cris Soto); and her great-grandchildren, Jerry, Jamie, Alex, Tracy, and Keegan.

She is also survived by her loving and devoted caregivers Rachel, Cecilia, Julissa Gonzales and their entire family. They took great care of her and became part of the family.

She inspired everyone around her to strive for their best and never stop trying. She loved spending time with family and friends; whether fishing with her family, singing and listening to music on a ranch, or creating a warm and loving home with her signature Southern style and grace. Her grace carried into the classrooms of Tyler Kindergarten, where she volunteered and worked as a teacher assistant. Most of all she loved supporting her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in all of their sporting events and social activities. Every person who knew her is better for it. She can be remembered forever in the beauty of the land she called home, Texas, and in the lives of those who were lucky enough to know her. She was a wonderful mother, granny, great-granny, a strong matriarch, and all around tough lady and she will be missed dearly.

A celebration of her life will be held on November 22 at 2:00 p.m. in Oakville, Tx. For directions or information, please call Julie Edlin at 361-318-2198.

The entire family extends heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to her care, especially Lynda Brewer with Exclusive Home Health, John Dawes and Melissa Alvarado with Mobility First, and her primary physician, Kim Gonzalez PA.
